Off-Net Calls in Pakistan are Going to Get Cheaper Soon

Off-net calls in Pakistan are likely to get cheaper by around 10% starting next year as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has revised MTR (Mobile Termination Rate) from 90 paisas per minute to 80 paisas per minute. This development was first reported by Dawn, and ProPakistani has now verified it independently as well.

A spokesperson from the PTA confirmed ProPakistani that the reduction in MTR is incoming. He further said that the current MTR rate of 0.90 rupee per minute is being reduced to 0.80 rupee starting January 1st, 2019.

“MTR will be further revised to 0.70 rupee per minute starting from January 1st, 2020”, said the PTA spokesperson while speaking with ProPakistani.

For those who don’t know, MTR or mobile termination rate is the amount that the receiving operator must charge when a call is made to another network. Current MTR of 0.90 rupee per minute was determined in 2010 and no operator could charge less than this rate.

Due to prevailing industry dynamics, there was a call for a reduction in MTR from mobile operators, except Jazz — that definitely had an edge due to a higher MTR as it receives the most off-net calls being the largest operator in the country.

It must be mentioned here that PTA had asked all stakeholders for their input in revising the MTR. After consultation, PTA had notified revised MTR rates last year, that were not implemented back then.

With new notification issued, the revised MTR will be implemented starting January 1st, 2019 now.

  • Nice one, @ Aamir where can we get the current rate calls for all the cell operators. I’m pretty sure these companies mention something else while charges are deducted more.
