PEMRA Bars TV Channels from Airing Dramas With Indecent Content

In another commendable move, Pakistan Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has directed all the TV channels not to air any TV serial with indecent content.

A notification, circulated on Tuesday, warned all the TV channels from airing any content that goes against the commonly accepted standards of decency.

The notification mentioned that the step was taken after PEMRA received recurring complaints against the indecent and obscene content in Pakistani TV dramas on Pakistan Citizen Portal (PCP), Pemra Complaints Call Center and Feedback System as well as through social media and WhatsApp.

All the TV channels have been directed to stop airing dramas which contain indecent scenes or they should delete such scenes.

In case of any violation, the authority warned to take legal action against the channels.

Earlier on Monday, the media regulatory authority had also banned a reality show ‘Naked and Afraid’ on Discovery channel for showing vulgar and obscene content.

This is not the first time PEMRA has objected to recent content aired on Pakistani channels. In September last year, the authority issued a similar advisory notice to all the TV channels stating that Pakistani dramas do not depict the real face of the society.

The media watchdog body had expressed that exploitation and violence in the society should not be shown in Pakistan in an ‘ADVICE’ notice.
