Chris Gayle Appointed as Vice Captain for World Cup 2019

Chris Gayle, arguably the most entertaining batsman in modern cricket, has been appointed as the vice-captain of the West Indies team ahead of the World Cup 2019.

The 39-year-old opening batsman will be deputy to Jason Holder for the mega-event as he felt that it was hisĀ “responsibility to support the captain and everyone else in the team”.

It is always an honour to represent the West Indies in any format, and this World Cup for me is special. As a senior player, it is my responsibility to support the captain and everyone else in the team. This will probably be the biggest World Cup, so there will be great expectations, and I know we will do very well for the people of the West Indies.

Chris Gayle has led West Indies in 90 matches between 2007 till 2010, which made the decision easier for the West Indies board.

Chris Gayle has been an iconic batsman for West Indies, accumulating 18,992 international runs in 103 Tests, 289 ODIs and 58 T20Is.

Speaking about his World Cup expectations, he said:

This will probably be the biggest World Cup, so there will be great expectations and I know we will do very well for the people of the West Indies.

The two-time World Champions will start their World Cup campaign on May 31 when they encounter Pakistan in Nottingham.
