WhatsApp Will Soon Stop Working on Old Android and iOS Devices

WhatsApp has quietly announced that the messaging app will stop working on a number of older phones, including a bunch of iPhones and Android phones. The instant messaging app currently caters to 1.5 billion users across the globe. Millions will be cut from the platform in the coming two years.

The purge was announced in a blog post called “support for older operating systems”. The company will refuse support for certain older versions of iOS and for Android version 2.3.7 (Gingerbread) and older.

The deadline for these phones is December 31, 2019. By 1st January 2020, WhatsApp on all the older OS will cease to work. The phones with the above-mentioned OS cannot install the application now if they don’t have it already.

Previously, WhatsApp ended support for Nokia Symbian S60, Nokia Series 40 operating system, BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10. Support for Windows Phone 7 was removed back in 2016.

Apart from this, the application will not work on any of Microsoft’s software after December 31st,2019.

The list of operating systems WhatsApp will not work on is:

  • Android versions older than 2.3.3
  • Windows Phone 8.0 and older
  • iPhone 3GS/iOS 6
  • Nokia Symbian S60
  • BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10

If you are able to update the operating system to any of the following before December, the support for your phone will not be revoked.

  • Android running OS 4.0+
  • iPhone running iOS 8+
  • Windows Phone 8.1+


  • All Social Apps Should be Running on
    Android 7+
    IOS 9+
    Win 10 Plus (Desktop Model too)
