PTA Raids Illegal Gateway Exchanges in Islamabad

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in its ongoing efforts in curbing the menace of illegal gray trafficking, has carried out a successful raid on illegal VoIP setup at Arsalan Plaza Pakistan Town, Islamabad on 11th July 2019 along with Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Intelligence Bureau (IB).

According to the details, the raiding team confiscated ten operational illegal gateways and approximately 130 active SIMs along with other allied equipment including routers, modems and laptops etc. No arrest was made as the system was installed in a vacant flat. FIA seized all the equipment and further interrogation is underway.

The successful raid against the gray operators was made possible because of continuous monitoring, commitment and persistent efforts by PTA in curbing the menace off grey traffic thus curbing the loss to national exchequer due to these illegal grey traffickers.

  • Grey traffic? Illegal gateway? Loss to the exchequer? Who, in the times of personal VoIP applications like WhatsApp etc would be using physical gateways? And why would the PTA and FIA raid such an installation?

    • Who, in the times of personal VoIP applications like WhatsApp etc would be using physical gateways

People still use that silly thing called Cellphone to call their loved once back at home.

And why would the PTA and FIA raid such an installation?
Those Gray VOIP operator establish call from foreign country using the local sim, this way the foreign call establishing company doesn’t pay terminating fees to Government of Pakistan, rather that Gray VOIP operator receives small amount for establishing that connection. The practice is illegal and amounts to Theft of money from people of pakistan
