Nokia Launches 3310 Successor 800 Tough & 2720 Flip Phone With 4G & WhatsApp

HMD Global, at the IFA 2019, unveiled a handful of mobile phones. Where Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 are well-rounded reasonably spec-ed and appealing smartphones, the real highlights were the Nokia 2720 Flip and Nokia 800 Tough, members of the new Nokia Original series.

The Nokia 2720 flip is, of course, the revived version of the decade-old Nokia 2720, while the Nokia 800 Tough is meant to be the successor of the indestructible Nokia 3310.

Nokia 800 Tough

Design and Display

The smartphone, as the name suggests, is designed to be extremely rugged and difficult to break. It has the simple, old school Nokia 3310 design elements but comes with an anti-slip rubber coating and rubberized edges. There is a lanyard eyelet at the bottom as well, in case the user wants to fasten it with his/her wrist or bag. The smartphone also features a flashlight on the top.

The display is a 2.6-inch TFT with a 240 x 320 resolution. It features a 19.8% screen-to-body ratio and 167 PPI pixel density.

Internal and Storage

Internally, the phone runs on a Qualcomm MSM8905 Snapdragon 205 (28 nm) combined with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB storage. The smartphone comes with an IP68 rating which means it can survive 1.5m underwater for 30 minutes and is also dustproof. Apart from this, it is MIL-STD-810G certified and can survive temperature swing. Dropping the phone is unlikely, but still, if you manage to drop it, it will probably survive the fall.

The loudspeaker installed is rated at 103 phons and the flashlight is rated at 198 lumens. It runs on KaiOS, thanks to which, you can map your track using the integrated GPS+GLONASS receiver. The Nokia 800 Tough comes with 4G support as well. Users will be able to use WhatsApp, Facebook and Google assistant on the Nokia 800 Tough.

Cameras

The phone features a 2 MP camera with an LED flash on the back. As expected, it does not ship with a selfie camera.

Battery and Pricing

Battery wise, the phone is fueled by a 2100 mAh battery, which according to HMD global has a 1-month life on stand-by and provides 12 hours of battery life.

The phone will be available for sale in early October at €110 in Black Steel and Desert Sand colors.

Nokia 2720 Flip

Design and Display

Bringing back the comfort and style of a flip phone, the Nokia 2720 Flip comes with two screens. The primary screen is a 2.8-inch TFT panel with 240 x 320 pixels resolution and the secondary (external) display is a 1.3-inch TFT panel with 240 x 240 pixels display. The external display will solely be used to check notifications.

Apart from this, the phone features a T9 style keyboard and a combination body with silver and black colors.

Internal and Storage

At the helm of the Nokia 2720 Flip is the dual-core Qualcomm MSM8905 Snapdragon 205 (28 nm) in combination with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB storage.

The phone runs on KaiOS as well and so, supports WhatsApp, Facebook and Google Maps. It also supports LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi hotspot creation and comes in single and dual sim variants.

Cameras

Just like Nokia 800 Tough, this phone features a 2 MP camera at the back and does not have a selfie camera. The 2 MP camera supports both, videos and images.

Battery and Pricing

This flip phone is fueled by a 1500 mAh battery which is claimed to have a 700 hours standby battery life.

The Nokia 2720 Flip will be available for sale in September with a €90 price tag.

Nokia 110

True Wireless Nokia Power Earbuds

  • The whole point behind KaiOS is that it’s cheap, $20-30 cheap, because it can’t compete with Android OS feature-wise. If Nokia is releasing KaiOS phones at the same price point as entry level Android phones then these phones will flop big time.

  • The table in the end shows specifications for Nokia 800 and Nokia 2720 yet it is labeled as Nokia 7.2 and Nokia 6.2 respectively.
