Samsung is Working on a Phone With Sliding Display

Samsung’s R&D department is always very quick with filing patents for new technologies. Most of the patents, despite being quite innovative, are too good to be true like the recently unveiled triple display phone patent.

This time, Samsung has filed a patent for a unique smartphone with a flexible sliding touch screen display that conceals the top bezel.

According to the patent, the display will be attached to a pinion and a complex rack which will allow it to slide upwards and downwards. When closed, the flexible display will hide the bezel housing the selfie camera and earpiece.

If manufactured, this smartphone will not be the first sliding display smartphone on the market. Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 3 is an example of this idea. However, according to Samsung’s patents, the mechanism that Samsung is proposing is completely different from what Xiaomi employed.

Based on the illustrations on the patent, the users will have to slide the display downward to reveal the earpiece in case of an audio or video call. Sliding the display down will receive the call and sliding the display up will end the call.

Even though the sliding display provides a large screen to body ratio, we are unsure if it will have any other uses since the patent does not specify any.

Like other patents, we cannot say if the device mentioned will ever be manufactured or if the technology will make its way to future products.

  • Samsung and several other manufacturers have confirmed work on under-display cameras. Still, it’s interesting to see brands thinking about yet another full-screen solution, joining the likes of punch-holes, notches, and pop-up cameras.
