Qualcomm Launches New Mid-Range Chipsets for Smartphones

The smartphone and telecommunication market are all about 5G nowadays. However, this does not mean 4G LTE networks are going anywhere anytime soon. They will remain the primary source of connection for many years to come, especially in developing countries.

Taking this into account, Qualcomm has just unveiled three 4G SoCs, i.e., Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460, for mid-range and entry-level smartphones. The Company has also stated that these chipsets will make its way to more mature markets like the US as well.

The three chipsets launched are:

Snapdragon 720G

Among the three chipsets launched, the Snapdragon 720G SoC is the most powerful of the lot. It is designed for upper mid-range phones and the G moniker refers to its focus on gaming which means it will support 10-bit HDR and Snapdragon 855-like anti-cheating measures.

The chipset comes with eight cores and packs Qualcomm’s Hexagon 692 DSP to support on-device AI operations. The cherry on top is full support for 4K video recording as well as for high-speed displays with resolutions as high as 2520 x 1080. The SoC is topped with an X15 LTE modem that provides download speeds as high as 800 Mbps.

Snapdragon 662

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 662 looks more like a toned-down version of the Snapdragon 720G. It is also an octa-core chip, but it reaches maximum clocks of 2.0 GHz; for comparison, the SD 720G has a 2.3 GHz max clock.

SD 662 is topped with an X11 modem that has a maximum 390 Mbps download speed. According to Qualcomm, this SoC supports “new triple camera configurations and smooth switching between them, ” It has the ability to store images in the super-efficient HEIF file format.

Snapdragon 460

Specially designed for entry-level or lower mid-range smartphones, this SoC features the same modem as Snapdragon 662. It comes with a lower-tier AI engine. However, it boasts improved GPU architecture and better performance cores. Hence, it will perform much better than its predecessor, the SD 450.

Considering the ever-growing competition in the Chipset market, we cannot say if these chipsets are a good idea on Qualcomm’s part or not, only time will tell. Stay tuned for more updates.
