Fake News Alert: Pakistani Experts Have Not Discovered Coronavirus Cure

On 13th April, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) made headlines after it announced a breakthrough in the treatment against Coronavirus. Local media outlets reported that Pakistani researchers had found a cure to COVD-19.

DUHS experts revealed that they have prepared intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) with plasma obtained from recovered Coronavirus patients. The IVIG could treat COVID-19, claimed DUHS experts.

However, history bears evidence that IVIG treatment was first used in 1952 to boost primary immune deficiency in human beings.

Moreover, IVIG treatment is being used in the US and Europe to treat Coronavirus cases by increasing their immune response. But both regions are reporting hundreds of deaths each day with high mortality rates, meaning that IVIG treatment is no cure to COVID-19.

In fact, IVIG is a type of passive immunization treatment that has been in use since 1890. Passive immunization is employed when the risk of infection is high, time for the body to generate an immune response is low, and no vaccine is available.

The announcement had been misreported by several renowned news outlets, that could have let to  a false sense of hope which could lead to complacency.

Dr. Tahir Shamsi, head of the National Institute of Blood Diseases (NIBD) Karachi, has fervently been advocating for using passive immunization to treat Coronavirus cases in Pakistan.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19, Chinese doctors used passive immunization and saved thousands of lives in China using this technique.

Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, have also corroborated the use of passive immunization in the treatment of COVID-19.

Thanks to Dr. Shamsi’s efforts, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) recently approved the clinical trials to ascertain the safety and effectiveness of passive immunization. Recently, Pakistan’s 1st COVID-19 patient also donated his plasma after recovering from the deadly infection.

For now, DRAP-approved trials of passive immunization remain the only technique, which involves plasma, allowed by the regulator to treat Coronavirus in Pakistan. Any other claim is nothing but an embellishment.

  • Sound like a cure as this heals the paitients. Not approved by DRAP but still a hope. Foreign media always promote their scientists. Then why we do the negative reporting. Two thumbs down. Be positive.

    • plz remove “Dr” before your name as you dont seem to be one.
i watched the ‘fake news’ in question here and this article is clearing things up. the problem is everyone here is a great scientist in their own right!!

  • At one place you are saying it saved thousands of lives in China on another place you are saying it’s not working in US and Italy. so is it working or not?

  • Your title says fake news but your article supports the treatment. Some pretty crappy journalism
