Nubia Launches The World’s Highest Refresh Rate Smartphone

ZTE-owned smartphone maker Nubia announced its latest gaming-focused smartphone in China yesterday, and it is the most affordable phone that comes with a whopping 144 Hz display.

Nubia Play 5G is the second gaming phone Nubia has announced in only a few weeks. However, in comparison to the recently launched Nubia Red Magic 5G that has Galaxy S20-grade specs, the Nubia Play 5G is a mid-range device.

Design and Display

The smartphone features a Nubia Red Magic 5G-like ‘X’ shaped paint job and a CNC metal frame. The triple sensor camera system on the back sits in the center on an elongated hexagon housing.

On the front, it comes with a 6.65-inch FHD+ (1080 x 2340 pixels resolution) AMOLED display featuring 144Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling rate, a in-screen fingerprint scanner, up to 4096 levels of automatic brightness adjustment, DCI-P3 color gamut and classic top and bottom bezels.

On the right-hand side, the phone is equipped with two capacitive shoulder buttons for enhanced gaming utility. It is available in black, blue, and white colors.

Internals and Storage

As for the innards, the Nubia Play 5G is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G paired with 6 GB or 8 GB RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB onboard storage. Moreover, the smartphone comes with a CE2.5 rack-mounted liquid cooling system that uses a 61mm large liquid cooling tube and thermally conductive graphite to bring the temperature down by as much as 16 degrees C.

On the software front, it runs on nubiaUI 8.0 skinned Android 10.

Cameras

At the back, Nubia Play 5G boasts a quad sensor camera system with 48MP main Sony IMX582 shooter joined by an 8MP ultrawide snapper, a 2 MP macro sensor, and a 2 MP depth sensor. On the front, it features a 12 MP shooter for selfies.

Battery and Pricing

The whole package is fueled by a 5100mAh battery that comes with support for Qualcomm QuickCharge 4.0 via 30W USB power delivery. Although 5000mAh may seem massive, remember that with the 144Hz disply, this may not even be enough to last the entire day.

The smartphone will be available for sale by 24th April and will cost $340 for the base variant and $425 for the maxed-up variant.
