Apple is preparing to shift away from Intel processors to its in-house ARM-based processors for Mac computers. According to insiders familiar with the matter, this announcement is planned for Apple’s next annual developer conference.
Rumors regarding Apple’s switch from Intel to in-house processors have been around for quite some time but recent reports suggest that the switch is imminent. The first Mac with an ARM-powered processor is expected to arrive in 2021.
The company reportedly has three different ARM-based processors ready for Mac already and these are based on the next iPhone’s A14 chip. This project is called the “Kalamata”.
The release of ARM-based hardware is still a few months away but Apple is announcing them sooner to give developers time to optimize the software for the new hardware.
Bloomberg explains that the shift in CPUs is due to Intel’s slow performance gains over the years. Apple observed major performance increases with ARM-based hardware during internal testing. There was an increase in power efficiency and this could likely also result in thinner and lighter MacBooks in the future. The laptops will still run macOS.
Apple’s next World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) is due for June 22 this year and it will follow the online-only format due to the pandemic. This is where the announcement for ARM-based CPUs is expected.
