The main aim of the design overhaul is combining Google’s three major pillars of communication, i.e., email, chat, and video. The redesign pretty much reminds us of what slack has been advocating for years except emails. Slack was introduced with the aim of replacing emails in workplaces.

However, over the years, email has become an integral part of most workplaces around the world. Keeping this in mind, Google has decided to deepen the integration between Gmail and other Google services.

After the redesign, users will be able to:

  • Directly access and import documents and to-dos from Google Drive.
  • Create rooms with people outside your company, adding cross-organizational functionality.
  • Send messages in chat rooms without having to leave Gmail.
  • Forward Chat messages to your inbox
  • Search Chat messages right from Gmail
  • Pin rooms to make them easier to find
  • Set your status to ‘Do Not Disturb.’
  • Set out of office notices
  • Ban removed meeting members from rejoining without an invite
  • Decide which meeting attendees can chat or present
  • Take picture-in-picture calls from Gmail
  • Access Google Meet from Google Docs

Google has not detailed the dates or timeframe in which the redesign will reach users. However, it will be sooner than later.
