Samsung Patents An All-Display Smartphone

Samsung’s offshoot Samsung Electronics recently filed a patent, spotted by LetsGoDigital, for a true all-display device with no ports, cameras, and physical buttons. It was filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) back in July 2020 and was published on October 29,2020.

The document details a device with multiple displays wrapped around it. There is a curved display at the front and a flat display panel at the back topped with semi-rounded displays on the side. According to the report, both displays are covered by transparent housing, which is made using transparent acrylic material.

As far as the cameras are concerned, the device features a sliding mechanism. The camera system is housed at the backside of the front display. For selfies, the users can use the rear display. Furthermore, to detect the user and the smartphone’s orientation, the device will also be equipped with a secondary hidden camera.

As for the power button, it is replaced by a piezoelectric sensor. The patent also talks about the possibility of eSIM and wired/wireless charging, albeit having no ports.

Use Cases

While talking about such futuristic devices, the first thing that comes to mind is its use case. According to the patent, the handset will have a couple of use cases, including displaying weather information and health/training info via graphics on the entire screen.

The device will also be able to adapt to the environment by detecting colors and displaying images accordingly. However, all this seems pretty good on paper, it might not seem as appealing in real life.
