The trend of disappearing messages that started with Snapchat has been majorly copied in different forms by a number of messengers over the years. Telegram and WhatsApp allow users to time their messages before they self-destruct.
Now Facebook, with its Facebook Messenger and Instagram, has launched something similar. Users will now be able to opt for vanish mode while talking to someone. However, this isn’t like Snapchat, where messages disappear after a set period of time. Instead, only the messages sent with vanish mode activated will disappear when the chat is closed.

According to Facebook,
We designed vanish mode with safety and choice in mind, so you control your experience. Only people you’re connected to can use vanish mode with you in a chat. Vanish mode is also opt-in, so you choose whether to enter vanish mode with someone. If someone takes a screenshot of your chat while you’re using vanish mode, you’ll be notified.
Even though Vanish Mode seems like a different take on disappearing or self-destructing messages, it is pretty much the same. The whole concept still revolves around the idea that was brought forward by Snapchat in 2011.
Over the past few months, Facebook has been revamping the way its messengers, including WhatsApp, work. Hence, there might be more features coming in sooner than later.
