Chairman Senate Committee Takes Suo Moto Notice on Corruption by OMCs

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has uncovered corruption worth billions of rupees worth by various Oil Manufacturing Companies (OMCs) in Pakistan, following which the Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Interior, Senator Rehman Malik, has taken suo moto notice of it.

Malik has directed the Ministry of Interior to work closely with the FIA and the stakeholders of the petroleum industry to find the loopholes that had allowed the OMCs to carry out the corruption activities and has instructed both the departments to submit a joint report on the matter within a week.

Malik praised the FIA’s efforts in detecting the corruption, adding that the thorough joint investigation conducted by the Interior Ministry and the FIA will help to determine suitable legal action against the perpetrators.

The hoarding and synthetic ‘shortage of oil’ had caused a loss worth Rs. 250 billion within three months to the national exchequer.

Malik added that it is imperative to repair the breaches in the system that enable the occurrence of such corruption.

The notice circulated by the Secretary Committee also highlighted the instance regarding the sale of poor quality petroleum products in the country and the seizure of an Iranian ship that was involved in the smuggling of oil from Port Qasim, Karachi on 11 August 2020.
