Snapdragon 888 Phones Will Get Android Updates For 3 Years

Google has been working to improve the speed at which Android updates roll out to smartphones around the globe as part of its Project Treble. The project has been around for three years and now it is partnering up with Qualcomm to speed up the process further.

Thanks to this partnership, Android phones powered by Snapdragon chips will get support for three years of OS updates and 4 years of security updates.

This will start with Snapdragon 888 powered smartphones and combining this with Project Treble will bring a monumental shift in software update policies. These policies will apply to security updates as well as OS updates. Google says that all smartphones launched with Qualcomm chips and Android 11 OS will be eligible for the extended software support.

Following Snapdragon 888 phones, all phones powered by 2021 Snapdragon chips will likely get extended software update support. There is still no word on chipmakers other than Qualcomm, however.

Google has also released adoption rates for Android 10 in 2020. The chart shows around 667 million active users, out of which nearly 82% got their updates over the air (OTA) directly to their device.
