ZTE Axon 20 5G Teardown Shows How Its In-Display Camera Works [Video]

In August this year, ZTE launched the Axon 20 5G as the world’s first commercially available phone with an in-display camera. Even though the company had explained the process they used, it was still unclear what components were used.

In his recent video, Zach Nelson from JerryRigEverything has revealed the complete teardown of the smartphone. The video details the internals of the device and its most exciting component, i.e., the in-display camera.

The teardown reveals that ZTE has used two screens stacked over each other to prevent the display over the camera from being pixelated. The screens include a tiny lower resolution square patch directly on top of the camera and the standard 1080p OLED panel over the camera and the square display. The square-display does have a greenish-yellow tinge to it, but the camera’s software most probably compensates for this.

ZTE Axon 20 5G is a first-generation in-display camera device, hence, there are some downsides to it. The pixels on the top of the camera are definitely slightly dull compared to the rest of the display. However, the smartphone does show where the industry is headed in the future.

We have seen smartphone makers come up with different innovative display tech in a bid to remove the notch and bezels from sight entirely. This smartphone is the first step towards the edge-to-edge display consumers are yearning for. Of course, the pop-up selfie camera mechanism solved the issue in the past, but not many people liked it as it compromised the structural rigidity and water-resistance of the phones.
