Corruption Worth Millions in Garbage Collection Exposed in Karachi

Officers involved in pocketing loads of cash in the name of garbage collection have been suspended by the Sindh Local Government Department.

The news came a week after the appointment of an allegedly corrupt officer, Shamoona Sadaf, as Director Outdoor Advertising in the DMC Central.

It was found that the suspected officers received Rs. 400 per house for garbage collection. Further details suggest they also made undocumented recruitments for the district municipal corporation, all of which have been canceled.

The three officers suspended on corruption charges include Director Sanitation, Muhammad Ali, Assistant Audit Officer, Ayaz Ali, and Nadeem Haider. As per sources, the local government has demoted the accused officers, and soon a probe from the National Accountability Bureau will be launched.

In light of material irregularities in the DMC Central’s undertakings, an extensive investigation will take place in the coming weeks.

In March 2020, the Sindh Anti-Corruption Establishment initiated a similar inquiry regarding alleged corruption, mismanagement, illegal appointments, and illegal promotions in the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB).
