The federal government is considering to introduce a robust data protection law in order to protect the privacy of the citizens, Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhry, has confirmed.
The statement comes days after WhatsApp announced to update its terms and privacy policy which will come into effect on 8 February 2021.

Taking to Twitter, the Minister penned that WhatsApp should have consulted relevant stakeholders before introducing such policies instead of adopting a unilateral approach.

Last week, WhatsApp updated its privacy policy, alerting users that they would have to agree to let Facebook and its subsidiaries collect their data, including their phone number and location, if they want to continue using the application after 8 February.

Digital rights activists have also voiced concerns over the latest update from WhatsApp, arguing that “Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA” was the forefront of the previous WhatsApp policies which can no longer be found anywhere.
