Babar Azam Becomes 9th Pakistani Captain to Win a Test on Debut

Babar Azam has become the 9th Pakistani to win his first Test match as captain. Babar was initially appointed as captain prior to Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand but he was ruled out of the tour due to a thumb injury. Babar took the charge for the first time in Pakistan’s first Test match against South Africa at National Stadium Karachi.

Salman Butt was the last Pakistan Test captain to win his first Test match on debut. Pakistan defeated Australia in 2010 to level the series 1-1 after the former captain, Shahid Afridi, announced his retirement midway through the series.

Fast bowler, Fazal Mahmood, was the first Pakistan Test captain to win his debut captaincy Test match. Under his captaincy, Pakistan defeated West Indies in 1959.

Babar’s own performance in this Test match wasn’t noteworthy as he fell to Keshav Maharaj in both innings, scoring 7 and 30.

Fawad Alam, Azhar Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Yasir Shah and Nauman Ali put in great performances as Pakistan won the first Test match by 7 wickets. Fawad Alam was named as man of the match for his magnificent century in Pakistan’s first innings.
