Petrol Price Increase Challenged in LHC By Judicial Activism Panel

The Judicial Activism panel filed a written petition in Lahore High Court (LHC), challenging the recent increase in the prices of fuel. Media reports say that the Judicial Activism panel requested the court to declare the recent fuel price hikes by the current government as illegal.

The petition has been filed because the recent increase in the prices of fuel has put the struggling populace in an even more difficult position.

To recap, the new prices of petrol became effective on February 1, 2020. The price of petrol was increased by Rs. 2.70 per liter, bringing the new rate up to Rs. 111.9 per liter, while the price of high-speed diesel (HSD) was increased by Rs. 2.88 per liter, bringing the new rate to Rs. 116.07 per liter.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) had originally proposed an increase of Rs. 13.18 per liter in the price of petrol and an increase of Rs. 12.12 per liter in the price of HSD. The said proposal was rejected by the prime minister. The new prices shall remain effective till February 15, 2021.
