Fortnite Developer Files Antitrust Case Against Apple in Europe

The Epic Games vs Apple fiasco is going international once again as the American video game developer has filed an antitrust hearing against the Cupertino giant with the European Commission.

Previously, the company had filed for damages against Apple in the US, Australia, and the UK through a new complaint about fair access and competition for developers and consumers alike.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said:

Consumers have the right to install apps from sources of their choosing and developers have the right to compete in a fair marketplace. We will not stand idly by and allow Apple to use its platform dominance to control what should be a level digital playing field.

In a newer press release from Epic Games, the company claims that Apple uses its iOS dominance to benefit itself while blocking competitors. As a result, it has completely eliminated competition through in-app distribution and payment processes. This is a clear violation of the EU’s fair competition laws.

For those unaware, the dispute between Epic Games and Apple started when Epic Games pushed a server-side update to Fortnite. This allowed the developer to bypass Apple’s payment system when buying Fortnite V bucks, thereby avoiding the 30% Apple tax. This was a clear violation of Apple’s policies and resulted in Fortnite getting banned from the App Store.
