Samsung Shuts Down Semiconductor Plant in USA Due to Load-Shedding

Samsung has temporarily shut down chip production in its Austin, Texas facilities due to power outages in the region. These power outages were caused by a storm that reportedly left around 200,000 locals without power.

Soon after the power outage, Samsung was requested to cut off power by the Austin Energy power utility, and thanks to that, Samsung was able to take measures to prevent tens of thousands of silicon wafers from getting damaged. This helped Samsung avoid potentially millions in damages considering all the materials present at the facility.

Samsung reportedly produces a 14nm chip at the Austin, Texas production plant. The region is also home to a few other big names of the industry including NXP Semiconductors and Infineon Semiconductors. It is also where Apple produces its Mac Pros and the company was likely also forced to stop production, but there is no word on that yet.
