Battle royale video game sensation PUBG Mobile has accumulated 1 billion downloads worldwide, making it one of the most successful games in the industry. The achievement was announced by game publisher Tencent earlier today.
PUBG Mobile initially launched in 2018 and has managed to gain over a billion downloads since then. The latest download figures accumulated over the years put it right behind other highly popular titles including Kiloo Games’ Subway Surfers and King Digital Entertainment’s Candy Crush Saga.
However, unlike PUBG Mobile, both of these titles are casual games that are much easier to pick up and appeal to a broader audience.
Daniel Ahmad, an analyst with Niko Partners commented on the game’s achievement saying:
PUBG Mobile achieving 1 billion downloads shows that core games, in this case a AAA Battle Royale title based on the PC IP of the same name, can achieve the same scale in the mobile space.
PUBG Mobile publisher Tencent is currently one of the biggest game companies by revenue. The company said that it aims to gain half of its video game revenue from outside its home market, China.
Several of its game studios including LightSpeed, Quantum, and Timi have already started working in the US in hopes to create original content to appeal to the global audience.
