SAPM on Health Warns of a Prolonged Third COVID-19 Wave

All of the Coronavirus vaccines registered and approved by the Drug and Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) are effective against viral infection, Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health, Dr. Faisal Sultan, has said.

While speaking to a local news channel, the SAPM noted that DRAP has approved four COVID-19 vaccines. Two of them have been developed by Chinese vaccine manufacturers Sinopharm and CanSino while one each by Russia and Oxford University.

Dr. Faisal disclosed that the government has planned to vaccinate all citizens free of cost, adding that more than 850,000 individuals including frontline healthcare workers and senior citizens have been vaccinated across the country.

He said that a batch of COVID-19 vaccines consisting of more than 1 million doses purchased from Chinese companies Sinopharm and CanSino have reached Pakistan. Previously, China had donated 1 million doses of Sinopharm’s Coronavirus vaccine to Pakistan in February, allowing the latter to launch a countrywide vaccination drive.

When asked about the ongoing third wave of the COVID-19 outbreak, Dr. Faisal said that the third wave is expected to prolong according to the prevailing situation across the country.

He urged the public to strictly follow the Coronavirus SOPs to curb the spread of the viral infection as pressure on hospitals is growing with the rising number of patients.
