Climate Ministry Approves Special Audit of Billion Tree Tsunami Program

The Ministry of Climate Change has officially agreed on the commencement of a special audit for the flagship Ten Billion Tree Tsunami Program.

As per the revised minutes of a review meeting issued by the Ministry of Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives on 30 March, the office of the Auditor General of Pakistan will carry out the special audit of the project.

The Ministry of Climate Change stated the following in a letter addressed to the Auditor General’s Office:

The Ministry of Climate Change has reportedly nominated focal persons to conduct the special audit of the Billion Tree Tsunami Programme. It stated that “External auditors, including some international organizations have already conducted an audit of this project and termed it a successful story,” which is why the government is certain that no shortcomings in the approved finances will be cited.

In principle, special audits are conducted after the completion of a project and if the project is ongoing, it is recommended that a regular audit of the project cycle’s financial year be conducted. In this regard, an unnamed source suggested that the audit had been approved in response to some elements that were trying to undermine the progress of the Billion Tree Project.
