Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has reported 33 more deaths from the coronavirus within the last 24 hours, including the demise of senior physician Prof. Dr. Ilyas Saeedi. This has taken the provincial death toll to 2,651.
Despite the two-day-a-week lockdown re-imposed in the province, the pandemic is on the rise with 1,294 newly reported cases. Additionally, the positivity rate of the virus has spiked in the ongoing third wave of the pandemic.

“We need a complete lockdown like that in June and July last year that had led to a slump in cases and deaths. There is no result of the two-day a week closure of markets as during the remaining five days all the activities sail smoothly,” the officials said.

They added that the provincial Health Department is mulling over whether to recommend a complete lockdown in KP to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) to control the spread of the virus.
