Everyone Might Need COVID-19 Booster Shots Every Year

The US is mulling over administering booster doses of vaccines between 9 to 12 months after initially vaccinating people against COVID-19.

According to David Kessler, Chief Science Officer (CSO) for President’s COVID-19 Response Task Force, booster doses of vaccines could be needed because the duration of immunity after vaccination is still being studied.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pfizer, Albert Bourla, has claimed that the public not only will require a third booster dose of COVID-19 vaccines but could need annual doses as well.

Data from the Massachusetts-based Moderna and New York-based Pfizer suggests that both vaccines offer effective protection for at least six months. However, the exact duration of immunity has yet to be determined.

Experts say that regular booster doses like annual flu shots could be needed considering the rapidly spreading variants of Coronavirus.

Rochelle Walensky, Director US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has said that healthcare authorities have also been tracking infection in people who have been completely vaccinated against COVID-19.

So far, 5,800 out of 77 million people in the US have contracted COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated against the viral infection. Of those, 396 were admitted to the hospital for treatment while 74 died.

Director CDC has said that most of the infections occurred because the individuals did not develop the intended immune response after getting vaccinated. However, some of the infections occurred because the individuals were infected by highly infectious mutated strains of Coronavirus.
