Volkswagen is considering closing four factories in Germany and expanding planned job cuts to as many as 100,000 employees in the company’s largest-ever restructuring, Reuters reported.
If approved, the closures would affect plants in Hanover, Zwickau, Emden, and Audi’s Neckarsulm facility, putting more than 45,000 jobs at immediate risk. Combined with around 50,000 positions already targeted, total layoffs could reach 100,000.
Volkswagen is struggling with competition from Chinese automakers, US tariffs on imported vehicles, and weak demand across Europe.
The company is also considering cutting investment by around 15 percent over the next five years and may separate its core Volkswagen brand and parts business into standalone entities as part of a broader restructuring.
Volkswagen declined to comment on the reported plans. It still believes that the entire group must undergo “far-reaching” changes.
Meanwhile, Germany’s powerful IG Metall union, Volkswagen’s works council, and the state of Lower Saxony have all pledged to oppose any factory closures or large-scale layoffs.
