AstraZeneca Vaccine Will Be Given to Older Citizens Only: Dr. Faisal Sultan

The AstraZeneca-Oxford University’s COVID-19 vaccine will only be administered to citizens aged 40 or above, SAPM on Health, Dr. Faisal Sultan has confirmed.

Taking to Twitter, Dr. Faisal penned that Pakistan has received 1.2 million doses of AstraZeneca’s vaccine, and an additional 1.2 million doses will reach the country in the next few days.

He also appreciated the cooperation of the COVAX program and other global partners, including the WHO, UNICEF, GAVI, CEPI, EU, and USAID.

The first consignment of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine consisting of 1,238,400 doses under COVAX, a global initiative aimed at equitable access to Coronavirus vaccines led by GAVI, had reached Pakistan on Saturday.

Pakistan will receive a total of 14.6 million doses of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine under round 2 of the COVAX distribution plan.

The first shipment of AstraZeneca’s vaccine under COVAX was initially supposed to reach Pakistan in March.

However, it was delayed after the Indian government forced Serum Institute of India (SII), the world’s largest vaccine maker and the manufacturer of AstraZeneca’s vaccine, to halt global deliveries and divert supplies to meet domestic needs.
