Govt Extends Closure of Schools & Colleges

The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has announced that the educational institutes will remain closed for another week. FDE has extended the ongoing closure of Islamabad-based schools and colleges until May 23.

After a week-long lockdown from May 8 to May 16, all workplaces and transportation services have resumed operation.

Dawn quoted an official at the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training saying that despite no directive from the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) and the Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC), FDE went ahead and issued a notification to maintain the closure of educational institutions from 17-23 May.

Yes, we have extended the closure until May 23. Meanwhile, Inter-Provincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC) and the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) meeting is going to be held on Tuesday to decide the future course of action.

Although IPEMC and NCOC get the final say on the matter, they will likely extend the closure of educational bodies given the current situation. The official told the media that it is likely that these bodies will allow educational institutions to reopen from May 23 under standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“If there is no major surge in COVID-19 cases, boards will hold matriculation and intermediate exams in June and July,” he said.

The board examinations, which are normally held in March-April, had been postponed by a couple of months due to the third outbreak of COVID-19 in the country.
