Young COVID-19 Patients Experience Symptoms for 6 Months: Study

More than half of young adults with mild Coronavirus infection experienced prolonged symptoms of the viral infection until 6 months later, a Norwegian study has revealed.

The study included 312 COVID-19 survivors aged between 16 and 30 who self-isolated at home during the infection and reported different illnesses of varying intensity 6 months after recovering.

According to the study, 189 or 61% of the Coronavirus survivors experienced persistent symptoms for months even after recovering from the viral infection.

Of the 61%, 28% reported a loss of taste and smell, 21% fatigue, 13% difficulty in breathing, 13% impaired cognition, and 11% reported memory loss 6 months after recovering from COVID-19.

The study termed the high rate of persistent fatigue among Coronavirus survivors as ‘alarming’ and noted that it appeared higher as compared to the survivors of other common viral infections, such as influenza, mononucleosis, and dengue.

Considering the fact that millions of young people have been infected during the pandemic, healthcare authorities around the world should start nationwide mass vaccination campaigns and implement other infection control measures, the study concluded.
