Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 Unveiled With Invisible Selfie Camera, 120W Fast Charging

Xiaomi has finally taken the covers off of its latest flagship device, the Mi Mix 4. Historically, the Mi Mix series has been Xiaomi’s concept smartphone lineup, showcasing bleeding-edge tech. The original Mi Mix ushered in the era of small bezel displays while future iterations improved on it further with a pop-up selfie camera.

With Mi Mix 4, Xiaomi has made the display edge-to-edge with no cutouts, notches, or pop-up cameras, the front camera is right underneath the display, hidden in plain sight.

Other than that the phone features the best hardware and cameras along with the fastest charging tech in the world.

Design and Display

The display is a 6.67-inch curved AMOLED panel with 1080p resolution and a smooth 120Hz display. It is a full-screen display without any punch-holes or notches, which is because the selfie camera is under the display, a first for Xiaomi. Unlike ZTE’s implementation, Xiaomi has completely redesigned the circuit array on the display to increase the light going through to the front camera. In layman terms, this means the portion of the screen above the front camera will not have a lower resolution which can make things look blurry.

This display supports 10-bit colors and is protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus.

The fingerprint sensor is underneath the display as well and it supports fast unlocks. As is tradition with the Mix series, the phone will come with a ceramic back as well.

Internals and Storage

Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is also the first smartphone to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888+, which is an overclocked Snapdragon 888 chip with a faster CPU and better AI. This is paired with up to 12GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage, though there is also going to be a 512GB variant.

The phone will boot Android 11 with MIUI 12.5 on top. In addition, it also supports Ultra Wideband for extremely precise GPS positioning which also works indoors, just like iPhone 12.

Cameras

The main camera setup on the back includes a 108MP 1/1.33-inch ISOCELL HMX sensor paired with an 8MP periscope camera with 100x zoom. There is also a 13MP ultrawide lens with a 123 degrees FOV. This camera setup is capable of recording 1080p slow-motion videos, 4K 60FPS videos, and 8K videos at 30 FPS.

The under-display selfie camera is a 20 MP shooter with support for HD slow-motion videos and 1080p videos at 30 FPS.

Battery and Pricing

The phone packs a 4,500 mAh battery with support for a whopping 120W fast charging through the USB C port. Xiaomi claims that it will take just 15 minutes to charge the phone from 0% to 100%. There is also 50W fast wireless charging support.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 will be available in Ceramic Black, Ceramic Grey, and Ceramic White color options, starting at CNY 4,999 ($770) for the base model (8 GB/128 GB) and CNY 6,299 ($970) for the top-end model with 12 GB RAM and 512GB storage. It will be available on August 16th in China with no word on international availability.
