Lahore’s Orange Line Metro to Get New Fares

The Chief Minister of Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar reviewed a proposal to modify the fare system for Lahore’s Orange Line Metro in a meeting with senior officials yesterday.

The updated fare is based on the distance traveled by a commuter and will replace the current flat-rate system that charges Rs. 40.

The Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) has proposed that the government charge commuters Rs. 20 for 0-5 km, Rs. 30 for 5-10 km, Rs. 40 for 10-15 km, Rs. 50 for 15-20 km, and Rs. 70 for 25 km and above.

The updated fare will come into effect after it is approved by the provincial Cabinet.

The Orange Line Metro has been in hot waters for a long time due to low ridership and the flat rate fare system. It has reportedly been incurring losses and is in dire need of change for its survival.
