Private Medical Colleges Ordered to Enroll Unfairly Rejected Students

The Pakistan Medical Commission has granted admissions to 29 applicants who had been denied admissions by private medical colleges in the academic session 2020-2021.

The decision was taken after the applicants’ complaints about irregularities in the admission processes of 19 medical and dental colleges were reviewed.

The complainants claimed to have higher Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) merits than the enrolled candidates, and despite having been interviewed by the colleges, they were not granted admissions.

The PMC conducted hearings of the applicants and the colleges in question, and found that three colleges — the Mohammad College of Medicine Peshawar, the Rawal Institute of Medicine Islamabad, and the Sialkot Medical College — had refrained from enrolling 29 applicants.

It then directed the concerned authorities to enroll the aggrieved applicants in the 2020-2021 session at the same colleges that had rejected their applications.

The PMC issued a press release in this regard that read, “Students were denied admission in the colleges by giving them unjustified low marks in the interview or unfairly demanding a complete deposit of the five-year fee or imposing a requirement of bank guarantee for four years in addition to a one-year fee”.

It added, “Therefore, these students have the right to be admitted to these colleges. Hence these students are granted admission in the respective college for the year 2021-22 subject to their acceptance”.

The press release further detailed that “the admission of these students will be adjusted in the existing seats allocated to the college. They will not be charged a fee by the college for the first year of study. As a penalty to the colleges, the first-year fee of the student shall be exempted and the fee structure for the remaining duration of the MBBS or BDS program shall remain the same as existed in the year 2020-21″.
