The Punjab Excise Department has found itself in a tough spot after the company responsible for the production of vehicle registration cards halted its operations.
The department awarded a contract of five years to the ‘Inbox Company’ and it ended in May. The company was contracted to supply 8.5 million cards at a cost of Rs. 438 per card.
The contract was extended for a brief period and another 400,000 cards were produced. The Excise department delivered more than 80,000 registration cards before the temporary contract came to an end.
According to a report, the department issued a late tender to avoid the risks of the entire process coming to a standstill. However, the progress beyond the technical bid phase has been slow.
At the moment, the Excise department now faces a backlog of 2.5 million number plates. It is exploring different options to address the issue such as introducing virtual cards.
According to a national daily, the price of smart registration cards for cars and motorbikes is expected to get a massive price increase in Punjab.
The hike in prices is due to a significant increase in the US dollar’s rate vs the Pakistani Rupee. When the contract of five years was awarded to the private company in 2018, the dollar was worth Rs. 140 and now it has skyrocketed to over Rs. 280.
The Punjab Excise Department-issued smart card has over ten security features including a monogram, a blue pattern that changes color with temperature, and unique lamination. However, the raw materials required for these cards are imported.

It is so late proses to deliver the smart card by post. I halted since 7 months to wait my smart card. Some how many candidates claim there card had misplaced and worrying about this responsible service plz. Check and verify by the contact numbers or emails verification system thanx
why we not produce RAW Material used for cards in Pakistan as its huge ongoing consumption. This can also our foreign reserves and also will produce employment as well.
Local RAW material agar banta yan milta be ho tu yeh nahi lain gay. Saray tabbar ko ab dollars main comission khanay ki addat per gia ha. Jo local rs 100 main cheez milty ha wo yeh rs 300 main be khushi khushi mangwa laingay. Local logoun kay rozgar se inka koi lena dena nahi.
Why do we need to use imported material, and why govt took panga for making plates. What was wrong in previous method of book, which can be cerified online jab card bhee online verify karna hy tu why wasting money on imported material. Sirf maal khany ke bahany hain, pehly kahi se bhee plates ban jati thee pata nahi ye plate me konsi kastoori dalty hain jo du du saal tak nahi milti

These all are dacoits, why they said that when took money and gave time for 1 week, I been waiting for my bike smart card since August, online contact operator says it should be delivered but when I visited Their office they said not approved yet, on visiting fareed kot office the person said when new govt comes after election then they will pay the amount to MRA then card will issue

Islamabad wala kasa 10 din ma smart cards da raha han. Kea Nadra k cards b nahe bun raha. These all are lame excuses.
Agr contract May sa khatam ha to dept na logon sa huge transfer fees Kun li. Kun lata han smart card k paisa. Why not doing contract with Nadra. Smart card ki color copy 5 mint ma bun jati ha hr photostudio sa in just 150 Rs. Oar ya log months laga data han.
Department should introduce e-card just like, e-driving license.
Complete department is in corruption. These stooges don’t need to renew the contract for cards when we have ID cards and vehicles record can be registered with biometric identification and thats it.
We must think out of the box, why should there be a physical registration card at first place??
It is 2023. We dont need any physical cards. It can be easily replaced with virtual cards. The process can be really over simplified by cutting the redundant overdrad.
