The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) and Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan plan to complete the restoration of the Mughal-era Arzgah, located next to the Picture Wall, by September this year.
The Rs. 2.9 million conservation project for the Arzgah includes replacing the damaged kankar lime terraced flooring, restoring the Ghalib Kari, repairing cracks, waterproofing the roof, and renovating the washroom.
The warehouse repair and maintenance are set to be completed by September this year. Following the renovation, the building will be open to tourists.
To be Used as a Conference Hall
Najam Saqib, Director of Conservation at WCLA, stated that the renovated building will be used as a conference hall. He added that it will be equipped with modern furniture and facilities, making it suitable for government and corporate meetings.
Situated next to the world’s largest Picture Wall and behind the Diwan-i-Khaas, the Arzgah was historically where the court nobles gathered each morning to receive the Emperor’s instructions on daily affairs and decisions.
Historical research by the WCLA reveals that in Sikh era maps, the building is referred to as Arz Gah, while British travelers termed it Arz Begi, indicating an officer responsible for reading letters and petitions to the King.
WCLA Director General Kamran Lashari also stated that the building will be utilized for literary events, including book launches and mushairas.
