Wrestling and bhangra are an odd combination in the WWE, but somehow they work. Although there have been several Indian wrestlers, who decided to bring their bhangra flair to the squared circle, there is one Pakistani-born wrestler who embodied that role to perfection.
WWE has a knack for taking “cultural inspiration” from its foreign wrestlers. From making a Canadian wrestler into an Italian caricature to turning the hairy Albert into Lord Tensei, cashing in on the bhangra culture was also on the agenda.
There have been a few WWE wrestlers, mostly from India, who tried to bring the “Bhangra flair.” Notable mentions include the Punjabi Playboy The Great Khali. This 7-foot monster from India had a few bhangra moments in the ring. While it was agonizing to watch his in-ring abilities, it was even more painful to see him dance.
Then there was the “Jinder-Berg”. The Modern Day Maharaja’s WWE championship-run experiment was a massive flop in WWE’s desperate effort to cash in on the Indian market. The only thing noteworthy of his boring title reign was his Punjabi bhangra celebrations with his entourage of the Singh Brothers.
Another one of Jinder Mahal’s cronies, Shanky also didn’t live up to the hype. His weird two-step dance should NOT be called a bhangra dance. As much as WWE wanted fans to join in on his dance, Shanky’s bhangra moves were a travesty.
Among all these failed “Bhangra wannabes,” there was one Pakistani wrestler who not only captured the essence of Bhangra, but perfectly incorporated it into his gimmick and moveset.
This Pakistani-born wrestler made a big impact in the WWE and amassed a loyal fan following in the wrestling community. If you’re wondering who this mysterious Pakistani wrestler is, you don’t have to wait long as we’ll reveal it soon. THAT Bhangra is coming to ProSports!
