Government to Refund Overcharged Electricity Bills

The federal government has decided to refund excess charges from overbilling in this month’s electricity bills, offering relief to consumers, according to a private news channel.

Under the pro-rata system, the federal government has directed that a reduced tariff be applied to the extra units billed.

According to the decision, for pro-rata billing, the tariff for additional units will be reduced. Consumers in the protected category will now pay 13 rupees per unit instead of 27 rupees per unit.

Consumers will get credit for the excess charges in their current bills, and any overpaid amounts will be refunded. Furthermore, NEPRA has removed penalties for late bill payments.

Last month, extra units were billed to consumers under the pro-rata system, leading to an investigation by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The probe revealed that reading dates were missing from the bills, and Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) failed to offer a clear explanation for this issue.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended the deadline for electricity bill payments by 10 days to give relief to the public-facing financial strain. Subsequently, the Power Division instructed all power distribution companies, including K-Electric, to apply this extension to the July and August 2024 bills.

    This is a complete sham.

  • What about the overbilling of last year’s summer? Did the Govt. fine the DISCOs and implemented sticker measures?

  • What about electricity bills issued by MEPCO in R Y Khan, at least to my knowledge, where meter readings are taken on 22nd of each month. How will they be compensated. MEPCO must take reading on last day of each month.

  • Government should privatize this blood sucking department this is a worthless department should be given to private sector .

  • ‘…Under the pro-rata system, the federal government has directed that a reduced tariff be applied to the extra units billed…’

Either there is something wrong with this news item or I have not understood it.

If there is over billing and extra units have been included in the bills, why should the government still be charging for those extra units even if at a reduced rate? This means my actual consumption, for example, for a particular month was 100 units. WAPDA showed it as 150 units and sent me the bill for 150 units. This is overbilling. According to this article, those 50 extra and illegally added units will still be charged by the government at a reduced rate. Why?

Has the government probed overbilling, pinpointed the culprits and punished them? No, not at all.

Unless there is effective accountability, the system will continue like this. We the poor people will continue to suffer at the hands of this corrupt and faulty system.

  • If the government has decided to refund then interest on that amount should also be refunded . No matter if it is 20 – 50 rupees per customer.

  • Everybody keep sleeping and being a keyboard warrior, keep complaining and talking amongst one an another.

If we don’t have the courage to rise up like Bangladesh, Srilanka, Venezuela and the rest, not only are we setting an example to our children but society as a whole.

A failed society that doesn’t want to do anything for the betterment of their country and future but just complain and talk.
