People are catching feelings for AI chatbots to the point that companies are stepping in and warning them against it. That said, OpenAI has just shared an announcement telling people not to develop feelings for its latest AI model GPT 4o.
GPT 4o is the latest free version of ChatGPT which outperforms GPT 4 in benchmark results and is known for its human-like behavior and responses. This is now becoming a cause for concern for OpenAI.
As the billion-dollar startup refines its product, it has observed recurring user behaviors with ChatGPT. While designed to simulate human conversation, OpenAI has recognized an unexpected level of emotional connection forming between users and the chatbot.
OpenAI shared its findings in the statement below:
During early testing, including red teaming and internal user testing, we observed users using language that might indicate forming connections with the model. For example, this includes language expressing shared bonds, such as “This is our last day together.” While these instances appear benign, they signal a need for continued investigation into how these effects might manifest over longer periods of time.
The statement goes on to express concerns as to how this could adversely affect human relationships. For instance, individuals might form social bonds with AI entities, potentially reducing reliance on human interaction. While this could benefit those experiencing loneliness, it might also impact the dynamics of healthy relationships.
Additionally, prolonged interactions with AI models could influence societal norms. For example, the deferential nature of current AI models, which allows users to interrupt and dominate conversations, contrasts with typical human interaction patterns.
