30 Year Old Doom 2 Gets Stunning Ray Tracing Mod

The classic first-person shooter title Doom II is known for having a vast variety of mods, but the latest one breathes new life into the 30-year-old game. The demon-slaying shooter is getting a ray tracing mod which makes it look like a modern video game.

The ray tracing mod, available for download here, transforms the classic game through the usual GZDoom. This modification introduces global illumination, ray-traced shadows, voxels, and fluid-based blood simulation. The integration of path tracing significantly enhances the game’s atmosphere and overall experience.

The mod makes darker areas of the game look more intimidating and the monster reveals become more menacing as a result, keeping the horror aspect of the game as fresh as ever. The modder has used the Voxel Doom project for the models, Half-Life 1 ray traced for the renderer, and the GZDoom community to make the mod available to everyone.

Admittedly, some aspects of the mod do tend to look cursed such as seeing the Cacodemon, the Icon of Sin, and other monsters in 3D looks completely unholy. Plus the exaggerated gore could be toned down a bit, but that is just nitpicking since the mod still looks great overall.
