Google Makes a Comeback in Foldable Market With Massively Improved Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Google’s new Pixel 9 lineup boasts four devices, with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold standing out as a major upgrade. A far cry from its predecessor, the original Pixel Fold, the new model offers a much more refined and sophisticated experience.

Design and Display

Pixel 9 Pro Fold brings larger displays, updated hinge and slimmer profile

Google has completely redesigned the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, resulting in a taller, slimmer device. Compared to the first-generation Pixel Fold, it’s notably larger, stretching 15.5 millimeters taller. This makes it even taller than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6. It’s also lighter than before, which should make it more comfortable to use. The hinge finally allows the foldable to open completely flat, unlike its predecessor.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s new dimensions accommodate larger screens. Users get a 6.3-inch cover display and an almost square 8-inch foldable panel. Both screens are OLED, refresh at up to 120 times per second, and can reach an impressive 2,700 nits of peak brightness.

Internals and Software

The hardware side is powered by Google’s new Tensor G4 chipset, the same as the rest of the Pixel 9 family. This is based on Samsung’s 4nm process which comes with 1x Cortex-X4 prime core @ 3.1GHz, 3x Cortex-A720 @ 2.6GHz, and 4x Cortex-A520 cores @ 1.95GHz. You can pair this chip with up to 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage.

Joining the Pixel 9 family, the Pro Fold runs Android 14 and benefits from Google’s latest AI advancements. This includes on-device Gemini Nano, enhanced Pixel Screenshots, and upgraded Magic Editor. A standout feature is the new “Add Me” function, which lets users digitally insert themselves into photos.

Cameras

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s camera system is familiar territory, with a 48MP main sensor leading the pack. Assisting it is a 10.5MP telephoto lens offering 5x optical zoom and a revamped 12MP ultrawide camera. Both the inner and outer screens share the same 10MP selfie camera. Video recording goes up to 4K 60 FPS on both the front and back cameras.

Battery and Pricing

Powering the device is a 4,650 mAh battery, which Google promises can last a full day on a single charge. While wired charging is available, it’s limited to 21W

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold comes in two color options: Porcelain and Obsidian. Pricing starts at $1,799 256 GB model, while the 512 GB variant is priced at $1,919.
