The Punjab government has amended the Punjab Finance Act of 1977 to implement a professional tax, causing widespread concern among residents.
This new tax will be directly deducted from the salaries of employees in various sectors, increasing the financial strain on workers across the province.
The Punjab government, already under fire for its economic policies, faces new criticism for its decision to amend the Punjab Finance Act of 1977. The amendment mandates all companies in the province to deduct a professional tax directly from their employees’ salaries, further burdening workers.
Following a Lahore High Court ruling, the Punjab government amended the 1977 Finance Act. Under the new regulations, the chief principal officer of each company is now responsible for deducting the professional tax from employees’ salaries and ensuring it is deposited with the government.
Companies that do not comply with the new mandate will face penalties. This enforcement has raised worries about the financial burden on employees, particularly those with lower incomes, as the policy affects workers from all sectors.
