Qualcomm has officially unveiled its latest addition to the Snapdragon 7 series, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 SoC, following an earlier leak. This 4 nm chip is positioned to occupy a space just below the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 in Qualcomm’s product hierarchy, with the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 remaining at the top of this particular family.
The chipmaker is touting the new SoC’s ability to bring “remarkable AI experiences to more affordable smartphones,” signaling its intent to bring advanced AI capabilities across a broader range of devices. Qualcomm has already secured commitments from several major smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, Realme, and Sharp, who are expected to announce devices featuring this chip “in the coming months.”
However, it’s Xiaomi that will take the lead in adopting this new technology. The Chinese tech giant is set to be the first to incorporate the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 into a smartphone, with an unveiling scheduled for September.
The new SoC boasts a 20% increase in CPU performance, a 40% boost in GPU capabilities, and a 30% enhancement in AI performance. Notably, it achieves a 12% overall power saving, with an impressive 45% reduction in power consumption specifically for the CPU.
The chip’s Kryo CPU architecture features a tiered core structure: one prime core clocked at up to 2.5 GHz, three performance cores reaching up to 2.4 GHz, and four efficiency cores maxing out at 1.8 GHz. This configuration supports up to 16 GB of RAM and UFS 3.1 storage, ensuring smooth multitasking and quick data access.
Like most other modern SoCs, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 comes with on-device generative AI capabilities, powered by a dedicated AI Engine NPU. This enables advanced functions such as AI-based noise cancellation and reduction.
Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the chip’s support for 200MP photo capture and 4K HDR video recording. The Spectra Triple ISP allows for simultaneous photo and video capture. It also enables ultra-fast parallel processing and smooth zooming, enhancing the overall camera experience on devices equipped with this chip.
The SoC supports displays up to 1080p resolution with refresh rates of 144Hz, ensuring smooth visuals for everyday use and gaming. Gaming features include the Adaptive Performance Engine 3.0, which optimizes performance based on usage patterns, and Variable Rate Shading which dynamically adjusts the rendering quality of different objects in a scene. The Adreno HDR Fast Blend capability enhances the chip’s ability to handle dynamic, complex scenes, while support for the Vulkan 1.3 API ensures compatibility with the latest gaming technologies.
On the connectivity front, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 supports both mmWave and Sub-6 5G networks, in standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) configurations. Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4 are also supported, ensuring fast and reliable local wireless connections. For location services, the chip is compatible with GPS, Glonass, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, and NavIC.
