Aaqib Javed Claims Sri Lanka’s Young Pacer is the Mirror Image Of Mohammad Asif

Sri Lanka’s young pacer Asitha Fernando received high praise from bowling coach Aaqib Javed following his standout performance on Day 2 of the first Test against England at Old Trafford.

Fernando impressed with figures of 3/68, claiming crucial wickets, including those of England’s captain Ollie Pope and seasoned batter Joe Root.

His ability to swing the ball both ways, combined with his deceptive skiddy pace, made him the most dangerous bowler in Sri Lanka’s attack, despite conceding runs at nearly five per over.

Aaqib Javed, a former Pakistan fast bowler, drew a striking comparison between Fernando and former Pakistani pacer Mohammad Asif, known for his exceptional control and subtle variations.

Javed highlighted Fernando’s natural ability to swing the ball without altering his wrist position, a rare skill that Asif also possessed during his prime years.

“After Mohammad Asif of Pakistan, I saw that quality in him. Not many people know about his ability. Without changing his wrist, he can swing the ball both ways,” Javed remarked.

Reflecting on his experience, Javed shared how he had identified Asif’s talent early in his career. He expressed admiration for Fernando’s current form, noting how the young bowler’s confidence has grown.

“He’s so gifted that batters don’t know which way the ball will go.” Javed added while praising the Sri Lankan sensation for his talent to move the ball both ways.

Mohammad Asif, who took 106 wickets in just 23 Tests, was renowned for his ability to deceive even the best batsmen. However, his promising career was cut short due to his involvement in a spot-fixing scandal in 2010.
