The opening day of the second Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was abandoned without a ball being bowled, as relentless rain disrupted the highly anticipated match on Friday.
Persistent showers since the early hours of the morning rendered the outfield unplayable, forcing the match officials to delay the scheduled start.
Despite efforts to prepare the pitch, the continuous downpour left the ground staff with little chance of getting the field ready for the match.
The scheduled toss was postponed as the rain showed no signs of stopping. By midday, it became clear that there would be no possibility of play due to the wet outfield with the umpires deciding to call off the day’s proceedings.
Weather forecasts had already hinted at the likelihood of rain, and the gloomy predictions proved accurate. With rain expected to persist throughout the day, the chances of any action on the field were minimal.
However, the abandonment of the first day adds pressure on Pakistan considering that they lost the first Test match and have only four days to determine the outcome of the second Test. Pakistan team faces the daunting task of avoiding a first-ever series defeat against Bangladesh.
The second Test, which is a part of the ICC World Test Championship, is crucial for both sides. Bangladesh managed to record a stunning victory against Pakistan against all odds in the first Test by 10 wickets.
