Pakistan’s Total Export Growth Outpaces External Debt

Pakistan’s total export growth has managed to outpace its external debt in the past five fiscal years, according to latest data from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

The country’s External Debt to Total Exports ratio has fallen to 253 percent in FY 2023-24, compared to its peak of 314 percent in FY20. This suggests growth in exports has remained higher in the last few years than growth in external debt, Topline Securities said in a brief statement.

Earlier, it was disclosed that Pakistan’s debt-to-GDP ratio fell to a 6-year low in the financial year 2023-24 to 70 percent, as nominal GDP has grown faster than debt driven by higher inflation.

SBP reported a 3.4 percent rise in the country’s total external debt and liabilities, which reached $130 billion by June 30, 2024, up from $126.142 billion last year.

Despite the growth in external debt, the external debt-to-GDP ratio came down from 32 percent in SPLY, due to slower growth in foreign currency borrowings. However, the external debt-to-export ratio remains high at 253 percent, although it has decreased from a peak of 314 percent in FY20.

    • comment se samajh aa raha hai sirf partiyon ke naaron se zyada gehri baat apki samajh nhi ati. yeh asli figures hain samne Kisi ki banayi baat nhi hai aur agar YouTube aur Facebook se zyada mobile use kerna at hai to AP verify bhi ker sakte ho

    • Exactly, the poor people are dying of hunger and unable to make ends meet.. And the govt. is fudging the figures to show that everything is improving..

  • Figures are fun. Comparison of financial result is an entertainment. You see from that angle from it look good. Bottom line is poor and middle class finding it difficult to meet day end meal and it is difficult for them to survive.
May be these statements are for elites.

  • What is the significance of Pakistan’s total export growth outpacing the growth in its external debt…? The day of celebration would be when our exports outpace our imports by a margin big enough to pay off our external in a few years.
    All the rest is cosmetics.

    • And it’s hard to see, that exports will improve under this govt. in fact if anything exports decreased in 2023 and are still below their peak in 2022.. May well decrease again due to incompetence of the government and their policies..

  • Cheat and Deceiver. Not telling whole and complete truth upon receiving lifafa from the bastard core of all evils/cancer of this leftover country since 1958! Ratio has has gone down because the bastard diggies of the installers and the cancer itself could not get debt/investment despite begging the world with their begging bowl. Their shaitani master will arrange minimum when the cancer polishes Shaitan’s boots and sells dignity for doggies bones

  • Is this a joke? Average is 255% and export growth has remained stagnant! It’s in the GDP. As soon as economy starts picking up, our export growth will be aft lower than our import growth which will push external debt up. Currently, GDP is low that is why we have this outcome. No substance here.

  • There has to be start at some point. The tight monetary policies had to yield some results and these are few of many. It’s so unfortunate that self driven biases take precedence over the country’s future. Every opposing party individual wants to prove encouraging news wrong only to satisfy his ego. May ALLAH grant us wisdom and a heart big enough to welcome and accept facts.
    May ALLAH Bless Pakistan.
    AAMEEN.
