Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has expressed strong confidence in Jason Gillespie’s ability to lead Pakistan’s cricket team as their red-ball coach.
Speaking on a podcast, Gilchrist highlighted Gillespie’s proactive nature in handling challenging situations, recalling an incident from their playing days in India that underscored his diplomatic approach.
Gilchrist recounted how Gillespie, facing a tricky situation after a controversial Test match in India where Australia was defeated in just two days, managed to defuse potential criticism with a clever response.
“Dizzy [Gillespie] was asked about the pitch, and instead of commenting directly, he said, ‘I can’t comment on that, but a mate of mine messaged me and said it’s the worst pitch he’s ever seen,'” Gilchrist recalled, praising Gillespie’s ability to navigate difficult conversations without inviting trouble.
Gillespie is already facing challenges as the new red-ball coach of the Men in Green, with the team struggling in their ongoing series against Bangladesh.
After a disappointing loss, which was their first-ever Test defeat against Bangladesh, both the team and Gillespie have come under scrutiny.
In the second Test at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, Pakistan was bowled out for 274, with Bangladesh replying with 262 runs with a solid batting display.
Gilchrist believes that Gillespie’s diplomatic skills will be essential as he navigates the pressures of coaching Pakistan, a team known for its passionate fanbase and high expectations.
