The Big Bash League (BBL) and Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) drafts have concluded, with Pakistan’s Usama Mir emerging as the sole player from his country to secure a spot.
The leg-spinner was picked by the Melbourne Stars in the third round, marking his return to the team for another season in the Big Bash League.
Despite 69 men and 11 women from Pakistan being nominated in the BBL Draft, no women cricketers were selected, highlighting the challenges faced by Pakistani players in securing spots due to national commitments and uncertainties over No Objection Certificates (NOCs).
This limited availability led league organizers to favor players who could commit to the full season of Australia’s biggest T20 league.
Usama Mir’s inclusion, alongside British cricketer Jafer Chohan, who has Pakistani roots and was picked by the Sydney Sixers, were the notable selections with ties to Pakistan.
The BBL, running from December 15, 2024, to January 27, 2025, saw strong demand for English players, with 14 of them being selected across the four rounds.
Ben Duckett, chosen first by the Melbourne Stars, and James Vince, retained by the Sydney Sixers, were among the top picks.
The drafts reflected strategic choices by teams, prioritizing player availability and reliability, with England and New Zealand players being favored heavily.
Despite this, the inclusion of Usama Mir remains a bright spot for Pakistan in the upcoming BBL season.
