Pakistani Cricketers to Undergo Rigorous Fitness Tests for Selection

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has scheduled comprehensive fitness tests for the country’s top cricketers. These tests, set for September 7 and 8 in Lahore, are a crucial step in the process of awarding new central contracts.

The fitness assessments come at a critical time, as the national team faces intense scrutiny following a disappointing 2-0 Test series defeat to Bangladesh on home soil. The series exposed several players’ lack of form and game fitness, prompting the PCB to take stringent measures.

Players under consideration for central contracts have been instructed to report to Lahore by September 6. The tests will be rigorous, with the PCB raising the passing criteria to 60%, surpassing the international benchmark of 50%.

The fitness tests will encompass a range of physical challenges, including bench presses, skinfold measurements, bench pulls, squats, and jumps. Additionally, players must complete a 2-kilometer trial run within 8 minutes and perform a series of three runs, each within 10 seconds, repeated six times with a 30-second interval between sets.

The PCB plans to announce the new central contracts after evaluating the fitness test results. It is anticipated that the number of players receiving central contracts will be reduced to 25, down from 30 last year. This reduction aims to foster a more competitive environment and ensure that only the fittest and most committed players represent the national team.

The outcome of these tests could lead to some players losing their contracts, while new talents may be introduced to the central contract list.
